MöllerWerke traction motor boots in test

Traction motor boots are used to provide constant and reliable airflow for traction motor cooling in rail vehicles. MöllerWerke does not only manufacture individual traction motor boots, but also offers its customers the opportunity to test them in its in-house laboratory.

Thereby, the traction motor boots are subjected to several tests. This includes, for example, the test for protection against the ingress of water (water spray test).
During this test the traction motor boot is exposed for several minutes to spray water escaping from a predefined nozzle size under defined pressure. After the test procedure the test specimen is inspected regarding damage or water ingress.

The water spray test is followed by a second test using jet water. As in the previously performed water spray test, the traction motor boot will be tested several minutes in the jet water test using a defined nozzle size, defined distance/angle and defined water pressure. With the completion of the second test, the traction motor boot is again investigated regarding damage and water ingress.

As a further test option, MöllerWerke is offering dynamic fatigue tests. With the help of this test procedure, possible material wear and tear can be determined. First, the traction motor boot is subjected to a visual and a pressure test. The pressure loss is then documented. In addition, it is possible to perform a cold break test in which the traction motor boots will be tested in a climatic chamber during continuous operation. Detailed test documentation is provided to the customer upon completion of all contracting testing.
